Allergy Pal

Allergy Pal, the Anaphylaxis care plan sharing app, collaboratively designed by MCRI, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, and ASCIA, is a free mobile application. This innovative app not only streamlines the management of children's food allergies but has also garnered recognition, winning the Australian Digital Health Association's Innovation Challenge.

Background

Parents navigating their child's food allergies face the challenge of efficiently managing and communicating vital information. The conventional process of sharing ASCIA action plans on paper proves cumbersome, requiring a more streamlined solution. Recognizing signs of allergic reactions and administering prompt first aid is crucial, demanding an innovative approach to empower parents and caregivers.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, the collaborative effort of MCRI, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, and ASCIA played a pivotal role in co-designing Allergy Pal. Utilizing the Curve Way process, which integrates Design Thinking for user-centric Product Design and Agile Development for rapid Product Development, we engaged with parents to identify needs, prototype concepts, and seamlessly integrate them into the Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The outcome is Allergy Pal, a comprehensive app that not only facilitates the digital sharing of ASCIA action plans but also empowers caregivers to recognize signs of allergic reactions and administer appropriate first aid. This innovative solution, born out of collaboration and designed with the end-users in mind, ensures a more informed and confident approach to managing food allergies for parents and caregivers alike.

The Results

Following its launch, Allergy Pal, collaboratively designed by MCRI, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, and ASCIA, has become an indispensable tool for parents managing their child's food allergies. User feedback highlights the app's effectiveness in streamlining communication and providing caregivers with the knowledge to recognize and respond to allergic reactions promptly. The digital sharing of ASCIA action plans has proven to be a game-changer, significantly improving overall preparedness and safety for children with food allergies. Notably, Allergy Pal has been recognized with distinction, winning the Australian Digital Health Association's Innovation Challenge for its impactful contribution to healthcare innovation.
